Tow barges were the public transport of the 17th century, Leiden and Oegstgeest were an important hub in the tow barges network. In 1656 the Haarlemmertrekvaart was built, from here they left for Haarlem and Amsterdam. The Trekvaart route (18.5 km cycle through Leiden and Oegstgeest) shows and makes you experience these historic waterways. Along the way there is also plenty to do and there are several points to get of you bike for a break.
